Open Source software releases: Q1 2020 recap

Long before COVID-19 took hold and made remote working the new reality for many, individuals and corporations from all parts of the world have worked together, collaborating online to drive technological advancements. Open Source software development thrives on remote collaboration, and continues to do so in 2020, with multiple projects announcing releases in the first quarter.

As some of most motivated and active Open Source contributors and maintainers around the world, Collabora's team of engineers and developers took part in a number of these releases, both on their own time and while working on client projects.

Here are some of the noteworthy Open Source software releases thus far in 2020:

January 2020

Wayland

Weston 8.0

Highlights: DRM backend now supports HDCP and hardware underlay planes, headless backend now supports OpenGL for testing, EGL_KHR_partial_update support improves compositor efficiency.

Highlights: New governance document, new xdg-shell protocol adds support forrepositioning already mapped popups.

February 2020

Wayland

Highlights: Add support for the Meson build system, add API to tag proxy objects to allow applications & toolkits to share same Wayland connection.

Mesa3D gears

Mesa 20.0.0

Highlights: Improved Panfrost performance and new features for OpenGL ES 3.0, OpenGL 4.6 on RadeonSI, Vulkan 1.2 on Intel and RADV.

PipeWire

PipeWire 0.3

Highlights: Redesign of scheduling mechanisms, comparable performance to JACK2. API reworked, now stable. Session manager now included.
